TongueBath #6 - September 1997
THE BEEKEEPERS Hold On b/w Blood Red(Beggars Banquet) Check you kahunas at the door. These guys produced all the life out of this one. -pIZZA mAN
THE BUTTERFLIES OF LOVE "Rob a Bank" b/w "Love May be Possible" (Coffeehouse) Even with lots of tremelo, it makes you feel like you're on quaaludes. -pIZZA mAN
COLE "Flithy Skin" b/w "N. East by N. East" (Hep-cat) Slo-glo dissonance rock that left me chilly. -pIZZA mAN
COMET GAIN "Say Yes"/"California" b/w "Hideaway"/"Sunsets at Her Window" and "Strength" b/w "A Film by Kenneth Anger"/"Letting Go"(Wiiija) Working class British pop music with political commentary edge, a cotny roughness, and a touch of `60s garage-psychedelia. -pIZZA mAN
THE CRUMBS "Shakespear" b/w "Gonna Like it" (Lookout/Recess) The satisfying sound of four men, with four chords, an overdose of testosterone and simple songs of love's demise. -pIZZA mAN
ELLERY JET "Push Pause" b/w "English, Irish, Scottish" (Hep-cat) Songs about life's frustrations and the search for meaning and love done North Carolina college radio rack style. -pIZZA mAN
THE HAPPY SCENE "Take My Teenage Head" 7" EP (Happy) This sucks. -pIZZA mAN
THE HI-FIVES And a whole lotta you! (Lookout) "...we could go to the grange, go to a movie, drive to Maine, and eat shrimp louie..." - A lazy man's review, I know, but you come up with something more profound! -pIZZA mAN
THE HI-FIVES "It's up to You" b/w "Baby Let's Grow Old' (Lookout) Well push my pelvis and rattle my rump! This 'un had me wishin' I was in the garage when they laid 'em down. -pIZZA mAN
THE MOOKS "Wagon Full of Devils" & "Atlanta, Georgia" b/w "Teeth" & "Up the Middle" (Broken Rekids)I accidentally started this at 33rpm, and liked it...a little. At 45rpm, they lost me. Maybe you guys should slow down?!?! -pIZZA mAN
SEKI "Four Acres (Out of tune) b/w "Stutter Step" and "Lieve" (Cursory Purse) Largely instrumental, a good balance of dissonance and intermingling guitar licks makes this a keeper. -pIZZA mAN
SQUIRTGUN Mary Ann (Lookout) If I were stranded on Gilligan's Island, I honestly wouldn't choose these 4 songs to be among my desert island discs, but the title cut is classic garage-rock romp. The rest miss the mark. -pIZZA mAN
