Brian Dornbach's music gives you the impression that you're listening in on someone else's conversation. The tenor of these conversations ranges from the mystic ("They Do A Lot Of Worshipping Around Here") to the truly disturbing ("Uncle Went Tending and Never Returned"). Part of this sense of "audio voyeurism" stems from the fact that Dornbach draws his sonic material from intercepted short wave radio broadcasts. Folks who get into radio-inspired electro-acoustic music (think Dan Lander, for example) will be entranced by this stuff. I am impressed with it for several reasons, not the least of which is the superb audio quality of the recording -- for a cassette there is remarkably little background noise to be heard. On a more artistic level, I am truly drawn in by Dornbach's rich sense of storytelling. Each of the three pieces on Compositions carries me along effortlessly through a sort of abstract narration. IMMP offers other Dornbach releases, one of which is due out this year. Enthusiasts of inventive experimental music are encouraged to check these recordings out.
